Israel : Court workers to strike from Sunday following collapse of talks with workers' committees

Starting this Sunday, all courts in Israel will begin a general strike, including Magistrates Courts, District Courts, the Supreme Court, and labor, traffic, and family courts.

The strike will

encompass all the court management employees, including secretaries, typists, keyboard operators, and maintenance staff. Exceptions committees will operate during the strike.

The strike is in response to a reform planned by the courts management aimed at bringing about a significant change in all work arrangements that will affect the workers' rating. The Histadrut (General Federation of Labor in Israel) does not oppose the changes, but says that reform should be conducted with cooperation and dialogue, not unilaterally.

The courts workers' committee said that the negotiations on implementation of the reform had reached a deadlock, when courts management and the Ministry of Finance budget director had created difficulties and refused to budge from their positions in all the meetings between the two sides.

Israel Courts Workers Committee Chairman Dani Hasson said, "Unfortunately, we have been deadlocked for the past 14 months. Courts' management wants to regard us as slaves, not workers, and is therefore leaving us no choice, and is pushing us towards organizational measures, up to a full strike."
