Pakistan : Union workers demand safety at workplace
LAHORE, July 28: Workers took to the street on July 27 to highlight the importance of prevention of accidents and deaths at workplace.
Gathered outside Labour Hall under the banner of
the All Pakistan Wapda Hydro Electric Workers Union (CBA), scores of workers marched on Nisbat, McLeod and Abbott roads while carrying banners inscribed with slogans and demanding provision of safety equipment at workplace.
After marching on the thoroughfares, they arrived at the Laxmi Chowk to hold a demonstration there.
Through a resolution, they expressed concern over alarming increase in fatal accidents involving Lesco workers since January this year. As many as 121 field staffers lost their lives while performing duty on lines during the period.
Lineman Gulzar of Lahore Cantt Sub-Division was electrocuted on July 27 while working on live line without proper safety gadgets and measures. Workers who become disabled while performing duty was much more, said the resolution unanimously adopted by representatives of Union drawn from all over the province.
Union General Secretary Khurshid Ahmed said that special measures should be taken to ensure safe working conditions for electricity workers by arranging professional trainings for them and providing them quality modern safety equipment.
Urging workers to refuse to work in case they were not provided with safety gadgets and equipment at work place, Ahmed asked them to try to provide better services to consumers.
