India : Fishermen give up strike
The Rameswaram fishermen, who have been on an indefinite strike since July 22 demanding the release of fishermen with boats by the Sri Lankan Navy, decided to end their strike
after the Centre assured to protect their livelihood.
Leaders of 11 fishermen associations met here on Sunday and decided to call off the strike and drop their plan to observe indefinite fast reposing faith in External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, who promised a fishermen delegation that the government would secure the release of all the 113 boats impounded by the Sri Lankan Navy.
Fishermen leaders P. Sesu Raja and N. Devadass, who were part of the delegation, briefed the fishermen associations about the deliberations of the meeting .
