India : Workers stage protest

Hundreds of workers at a private tractor manufacturing plant at Ammaiyanaickanur laid siege to the factory on Monday. They were condemning denial of job to them. They also staged a

demonstration on the National Highway 7 till 3 p.m. The management had denied work to workers who had come for the first shift and had asked them to leave the premises. More than 650 workers who have been working in the plant for the past 10 to 27 years on contract basis were affected, workers alleged. It was said that some employees had got eight per cent wage revision, while some others had got a 13 per cent revision. The workers had planned to strike work on August 11 demanding parity in wage revision. They had given a petition to the factory management in this connection. Later, after meeting the union officials, the management asked the workers to come for morning shift on Wednesday. — Staff Reporter
