USA : Union delivers petitions over outsourcing spat with Mayo

ROCHESTER, Minn. – The fight against the outsourcing of 700 food service jobs at Mayo Clinic continued Monday.

SEIU Healthcare Minnesota is claiming the hospital has not provide basic

information about how, why and when the decision to outsource was made.

“It is unacceptable that Mayo continues to deny basic information workers and their union need to know about this decision,” said SEIU Healthcare Minnesota President Jamie Gulley.  “This information is especially important as now it seems the decision may have been made under the cloud of dubious ethics. Workers, and the whole community, deserve to know what really went on to bring Mayo to the point where they decided to take 700 dedicated employees and move them out of the Mayo family.”

A delegation of food service workers presented petitions to Mayo’s HR department on Monday. They tell us that the worker and community petition was signed by over 95% of food service workers and over 1,100 people asking for Mayo to reconsider their decision. Along with the petition, they had a letter they intended to present to David Gonyea, the Director of Labor Relations with Mayo Clinic. However, the group was told that Mr. Goneya was not available.

“He knew that we were coming to speak with him and I feel that it’s disrespectful to disregard appointments and people that would like to speak with you requiring immediate attention,” explains Jennifer Norgren, a food service worker. “The fact that he’s been tip-toeing around and ignoring the union’s request for information that just, that gives me a bad taste in my mouth.”

In response, the hospital has issued the following statement:

“Mayo Clinic has received SEIU’s petition. We are awaiting the four scheduled negotiation sessions with SEIU later this month and next month, will review the petition in the meantime, and look forward to discussing with SEIU during the negotiation sessions. Currently, Mayo Clinic has multiple approaches to food and nutrition services across our campuses. This change is about creating efficiency and consistency, and ensuring the highest quality possible for the food and nutrition services throughout Mayo Clinic. Our focus is on supporting our Food Service teams throughout this transition.”

Norgren tells us food service worker and supporters will hold an informational picket and rally on August 24th from 2:30-4:00pm in front of St. Mary’s Hospital.
