India : Conservancy workers protest LG's directive
Conservancy workers attached to Oulgaret Municipality owing allegiance to various unions on Tuesday took out a rally from Kamaraj Salai to Raj Nivas in order to register their strong protest
against the directive of the Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi to engage workers even on Sundays for garbage clearing work.
The protesters were, however, blocked en route by the police following which they staged a sit-in near the Head Post office .
Rescind decision
Sagayaraj, a spokesperson of the Joint Action Committee of the trade unions said the authorities should immediately rescind the decision.
He said that workers who failed to report for the garbage cleaning work on Sundays were forced to take their off on Wednesdays. The authorities should not engage workers on Sundays failing which they will intensify their agitation and go on a mass leave, he warned.
Shortage of manpower
The agitators claimed that garbage had been piling up everywhere in the city due to shortage of manpower. The private operator who was entrusted with the work of clearing garbage has not done it effectively.
Workers’ plight
The authorities are also not aware of the plight of the workers engaged by the contractor, they claimed.
Later, Mr. Sagayaraj, along with representatives of various trade unions, submitted a memorandum at the Raj Nivas and the Local Administration Department.
