Support for RMT as Southern fails passengers
8 August 2016
Services into London will be severely hit this week by a five-day strike after Southern refused an offer by the union to suspend the action.
The RMT called on the train company to follow an agreement reached with Scotrail over similar issues.
A statement from the union outlines the offer described by general secretary Mick Cash as “a sensible way forward…to suspend the industrial action”.
“We would speedily meet to discuss and agree train despatch, something we are doing with Scotrail,” he adds.
“I feel that this is a positive way forward that will bring an end to this dispute and enable Southern to start running a full service again.”
The dire service on the Southern network has attracted widespread media and political attention and led to passenger protests.
Our general secretary Mark Serwotka has written to the RMT to offer our continued support and solidarity.
“You have the complete support of PCS in your fight against attempts to put private profit before rail safety and in your defence of the safety of staff and passengers on Southern services,” Mark said.
“We have no doubt your campaign against attacks on the safety of staff and commuters and the vital role of conductors can be successful and we are absolutely clear that your fight is our fight.”
