India : Trade union, employee associations to strike on September 2

PANJIM: All trade unions and employee associations under the banner of Goa Convention of Workers have decided to participate in the nationwide strike on September

2 called to press for their 12 point charter of demands and against anti-labour and anti-people government policies.

Addressing the media, Goa Convention of Workers Convenor Suhas Naik stated the strike is to protest the sweeping changes the government has proposed to the existing labour laws which will push the working people out of the coverage of these labour legislations.

“Efforts are being made to undermine farmers’ and workers’ rights. It is a protest against Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in financial sectors (public sector banks) railways, defence including retail trade. It is to protest against ‘corporatization’ of major ports, defence ordinance factories which will open up the gates of ‘privatization’ to foreign multinational companies,” Naik said.

Stating that trade unions are opposing anti-labour policies he said the onslaught on the working people’s rights have increased and have been accentuated during the last two years.

Naik said, workers employed in various factories, industries, mines, port and dock will join the strike and all industrial estates will remain closed. Employees of public sector banks and insurance companies will also participate, he added.

All trade unions have also decided to hold a protest demonstration on August 17from 10.00 am onwards at Kranti Circle, Panjim to highlight their demands.
