India : Comtrust staff to relaunch stir

Various trade unions have given a call for a sit-in in front of the District Collectorate here on August 19 against a reported move to convert the Commonwealth Trust (Comtrust)

Weaving Factory and its 2.5 acre premises at Mananchira into a public-private participation (PPP) venture.

The leaders of the trade unions said the proposal to start a firm under PPP model had gained momentum when the well-wishers of the 172-year old factory had been hoping for its revival. A mass movement would be started and steps would be taken to pressurise the State and the Centre to restore the factory, they said.

'No positive development'

Traders unions had been protesting for the last five years against the delay in government takeover of the factory. The State Assembly had unanimously passed the Bill allowing the takeover on July 25, 2012, and the Governor had consequently referred the Bill to the Union Home Ministry for the President’s approval.

However, no positive development had taken place, they said.

The Centre had been referring the Bill back to the State government, seeking the opinion of various departments.
