Report: North Korean diplomat in London defects
A North Korean diplomat stationed in London has fled with his family, according to a South Korean newspaper.
The diplomat is believed to have
deserted his post with his family to seek asylum in another country, the JoongAng Ilbo newspaper reported. The BBC identified the official as Thae Yong Ho, a counselor at the North Korean embassy and deputy to the ambassador.
“The North Korean Embassy in Britain tried to find him, but it is said that it has failed,” said the source, according to JoongAng Ilbo.
He is the latest of several senior North Korean officials to flee. Earlier this year, the media reported the defections of a North Korean party official and his family from a job in Russia. According to the source, that official was escaping growing pressure to find extra sources of foreign currency to be transferred to Pyongyang.
At the time, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un was reportedly "upset by such reports," a source told the newspaper.
Yong Ho had been under pressure from Pyongyang to respond to international criticism over human rights violations in North Korea, including backlash in London.
