HMRC cleaners' strike suspended as hours reinstated

2 September 2016

We have suspended a planned three-day strike by cleaners in HMRC offices
in Merseyside after the company that employs them agreed to reinstate lost hours.

Following well-supported action in July, our members across the six sites had planned a further walkout from Monday.

The dispute was triggered by multinational contractor ISS unilaterally cutting the hours of staff working on the contract in an attempt to off-set the increase in the national minimum wage.

The suspension follows the company’s agreement to immediately reinstate the hours and halt proposals to reduce hours in other HMRC sites, to allow for talks on long-term pay and conditions.

We have reserved the right to take further industrial action if ISS fails to honour this agreement.

Our general secretary Mark Serwotka said: “We welcome the restoration of cleaners’ hours, although this would never have been achieved without our members taking action.

“We hope the company is genuinely committed to meaningful talks on this and other issues. And we hope HMRC and other government departments have got the message that we will not allow them to simply pass the buck when low paid staff are being treated unfairly in their workplaces.”
