UK : Unite stands shoulder to shoulder in solidarity with Britain's Polish community

Members of Unite’s Community section will be standing shoulder to shoulder in solidarity with the Polish community at tomorrow’s (Saturday 3 September) unity ‘march of silence’ in Harlow which follows the

tragic killing of Arkadiusz Jozwik.

Arkadiusz Jozwik was attacked by a gang outside a pizza restaurant in Harlow, Essex after apparently being overheard speaking in Polish. His death comes amid a five-fold increase in reported race hate incidents following the Brexit vote.

This weekend also sees HOPE not hate supporters coming together to hold a series of #MoreInCommon events in communities across the UK to remember and celebrate the life of Jo Cox, the Yorkshire MP who was murdered in June.

Bringing people and communities together around what we have in common, the events are an opportunity to celebrate our multicultural society and bridge divides between communities.

Commenting Unite Community coordinator for London and Eastern region David Condliffe said: “Unite the union stands shoulder to shoulder in solidarity with the Polish community in Britain following the recent unjust and tragic death of Polish factory worker Arkadiusz Jozwik.

“Xenophobia and racism have no place in our society and the poison of hate must not be allowed to take root in our communities. We have more in common than that which divides us and our nation’s values of tolerance and respect will not be destroyed by those who seek to sow division.

“Our members taking part in tomorrow’s march of silence will be taking with them a message of solidarity and support to the Polish community and a pledge that Unite will continue to support communities and workers of all nationalities and backgrounds.”
