UK : Staff at North-east college to go on strike over pay

Support staff at a North-east college are set to go on strike.

Around 45 workers at the North East Scotland College are expected to carry out industrial action tomorrow.

The Unison union

is calling for the strike due to a dispute surrounding the 2016/2017 pay deal.

Unison members have been offered the same percentage increase as lecturers which equates to 2.5% over two years.

However, the union has asked for a greater increase, but the college has said it would cost them an extra £3.3 million, which it says is not financially sustainable.

Rob Wallen, principal of North East Scotland College, said: “We have received notification from Unison that they plan some industrial action in colleges on September 6.

“The position at North East Scotland College is that we do not expect any significant impact on the work of the college and all campuses and centres will remain open for business as usual, with all classes running as planned.”

The college will remain open tomorrow and contingency plans will be put in place to minimise any disruption.
