India : Industries urged to train workers in industrial safety

Industries need to train workers and ensure they follow all precautionary measures to avoid industrial accidents, said P. Bose, Director of Industrial Safety and Health, here on Saturday.

Accidents happen

because of carelessness, technical reasons, or improper maintenance of equipment and machinery. In the case of protection, there are engineering methods and personal protective gear. Both are important for industrial safety.

Industries should try controlling the accidents by adopting the right processes and engineering methods. The units should also ensure that workers know how to use the protective gear.

The workers should be careful especially while using portable equipment and these should be maintained periodically.

Persons who are in-charge of safety of the workers should take up a survey at the respective units and identify unsafe areas. The required protection methods should be taken up and these should be maintained and workers should be educated about it, he said.

He was speaking at a training programme on “Safety and Health in Engineering Industries” organised by the Directorate of Industrial Safety and Health and the National Safety Council – Coimbatore Regional Sub-Committee.

K. Ramasamy, chairman of Roots Group of Companies, said that according to an ILO statistics, while about 10 lakh people died of road accidents in a year globally, it was 11 lakh in industrial accidents. By 2020, the number is expected to double. “Many accidents can be averted by taking precautionary measures and by being careful,” he said.
