The teachers of Yuba City Unified School District will go on strike Thursday after nearly a year of dead-end contract negotiations. The district has hired replacement teachers to continue to provide education for its students and every school in the district will remain open for the duration of the strike, Superintendent Nancy Aaberg said.
The district sent a notice about the strike to the parents of its students through its phone system on Tuesday. Students are still required to attend school and the normal rules apply to student absences. Students who do not show up will receive an unexcused absence unless they have a valid reason, Aaberg said.
Yuba City Teachers Association and the district have not reached a collective bargaining agreement for the 2015-16 school year despite frequent public statements from both sides that they were willing to negotiate.
The last bargaining meeting was Aug. 24 and no date has been set for another meeting. Both sides placed the responsibility for setting up another meeting on the other side.
YCTA President Dina Luetgens delivered the strike notice to the district Tuesday and held a new conference at Yuba City High School at 4 p.m.
“This is both an economic strike in support of the YCTA’s fair bargaining demands and an unfair practice strike to challenge the District’s violation of California law,” Luetgens wrote in the strike notice.
