Major pre-TUC rally to call for action against cuts

8 September 2016

A major rally before the start of this year's TUC
Congress in Brighton will hear speakers, including shadow chancellor John McDonnell and PCS president Janice Godrich, discuss the need to unite to defeat the Tories and their continuing programme of austerity.

The rally at 1pm on Sunday afternoon (11 September), organised by the National Shop Stewards Network (NSSN) to which PCS is affiliated, will hear speakers explain that it's time to get organised and support Jeremy Corbyn's campaign for re-election as Labour leader.

They will also stress the need to bring together all the struggles against the Tories and organise mass co-ordinated strike action. Theresa May's government has neither authority nor legitimacy but she still intends to plough on with a programme of massive cuts. Across the UK workers are walking out to defend their terms and conditions, look for improvements in their pay, and to oppose job cuts and office closures.

Teachers and lecturers finished the academic year on strike with plans for more action in the autumn term. Junior doctors have voted by nearly 60% to reject an inadequate deal but the Tories still intend to impose.

PCS members have been at the forefront of industrial action, with Welsh museums staff striking for fair pay, cleaners of HMRC buildings walking out to oppose cuts to their hours and security guards who keep Met Police control centres safe beginning 4 days of action over low pay in the coming weeks from tomorrow (9 September).

RMT members have been on strike in Southern Rail, ScotRail and Eurostar. Teaching assistants, especially in Durham and Derby, have run high-profile campaigns against massive pay cuts of up to 23%.

And we have seen victorious strikes by low-paid and precarious workers in the City of London and by couriers at Deliveroo.
