Met Police control centres face strikes by security guards
6 September 2016
The guards who work for private company Engie are planning walkouts over four days in the coming weeks from this Friday.
Night shift workers in Hendon and Bow will strike from 1am and 7am, with the day shift out between 7am and 1pm, on Friday 9, Tuesday 13, Friday 16 and Thursday 22 September.
Guards are suffering worsening pay, with real terms rates falling year on year and starting salaries now less than £22,000 in London, including working nights for no extra.
But it would only cost the French-based company around £25,000 to settle the dispute.
We are asking other members and supporters to show their solidarity and contribute to the strike fund.
This Friday is the first passing out parade from the new building at Hendon and the site is expected to be busier than usual.
If pay falls any lower it will drop below the Greater London Authority’s London living wage. A requirement of the contract is that this is paid as a minimum.
Our general secretary Mark Serwotka said: “Security at the Met Police’s control centres is obviously a number one priority so it is disappointing that this private company is not taking the guards’ concerns seriously.
“We are committed to negotiating a resolution but determined to take action if necessary to ensure staff are treated fairly.”
