India : Anganwadi workers begin hunger strike
Anganwadi workers affiliated to the Karnataka Rajya Anganwadi Karyakariyara Mathu Sahakiyara Federation began their two-day relay hunger strike here on Tuesday demanding time-bound promotions for them and protesting against the
transfer of anganwadi workers from one centre to another.
The workers came in a procession to the Deputy Commissioner’s office presented their charter of demands to the officials before beginning their hunger strike. They charged that in Aland taluk, the anganwadi workers were being subjected to punishment transfers and were denied promotion.
The workers said that the authorities had transferred an anganwadi worker in Yelsangi in Aland taluk to a centre in Aland town to fill a vacancy created by the retirement of an anganwadi worker. They said that the anganwadi assistant working at the Aland town centre should be promoted instead of transferring another worker from another centre.
