Canada : Striking Montreal Old Port employees set up protest camp

Striking Old Port employees camped out near their workplace overnight in the latest instalment of the dispute between their union and their employer.

The union, the Syndicat des employés du Vieux-Port

de Montréal, represents about 200 people who work in box offices or as sales clerks, maintenance workers, parking attendants and security personnel at the Old Port.

Union representatives say their employer, the Canada Lands Company, has been ignoring their demands.

Salaries and paid sick leave are the main sticking points. They want to boost entry-level wages from the current $10.67 an hour to $15 an hour.

Just last week they voted against the latest offer from the Old Port, saying it failed to address their demands for higher wages and more sick days.

According to the union, management's latest offer proposed an entry-level wage of $12.38 an hour and made no mention of paid sick days.

The workers have been on strike since May 27 and without a collective agreement since March 31. Attractions such as the Montreal Science Centre and Clock Tower Beach have been closed all summer due to the strike.
