Update: 1:08PM A TRADE union wants its leader and other men detained by police for allegedly
uttering comments at a panel discussion released immediately.
The Transport Workers Union said it was aware that Fiji Islands Council of Trade Unions (FICTU) general secretary, Attar Singh and other leaders were in police custody.
"As the general secretary of Transport Workers Union and assistant general secretary of FICTU, we are calling for the immediate release of the leaders," said Kamlesh Kumar in a statement.
"We further ask the relevant authorities to intervene, ensuring that the rights of the leaders are protected."
Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA) leader Sitiveni Rabuka, National Federation Party leader Professor Biman Prasad, Attar Singh, former politician and academic Dr Tupeni Baba and a civil society organisation representative are being interviewed by police.
A statement from police this morning said five men continue to be interviewed regarding information received on comments uttered during a panel discussion earlier this week.
Police have reiterated that this is being done to clarify if the information is credible as the alleged utterances would have affected the safety and security of all Fijians.
