India : “CITU will help IT company employees form trade union”

The Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) has come forward to help software engineers and other employees in the Information and Technology sector companies form a trade union to ensure

their job security, according to A. Soundararajan, CITU State president.

The State government should give due recognition to such a union, he said.

Addressing mediapersons here at the venue of the 13th annual State-level conference here on Sunday, he said safety of women workers, especially those who worked on shifts, should be ensured.

Many employees, who worked through the night, were vulnerable to health problems. Hence, necessary medical facilities should be provided.

Several students in engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu and several IT educational institutions across the country were being lured by employers during campus recruitment, but after the selection, jobs were not provided immediately and they had to wait for a long time.

The CITU has appealed to the State government to enact the Trade Union Recognition Act, which was implemented in West Bengal, Maharashtra and Kerala, to protect the rights of workers.

Taking a dig at the Centre, he said the Employees Provident Fund was not properly utilised to benefit the beneficiaries. About five to 15 per cent of the EPF amount was invested in the share market and government schemes.

He also urged the Centre to withdraw its efforts to amend the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.
