“Our members don’t want to strike, but by a 97.2% margin, they have made it clear they will in order to protect our students and make our classrooms the top priority,” Stockton Teachers Association President Erich Myers said in a statement.
The vote means the union’s executive board has the support of its members to call a strike if negations between the Stockton Unified School District don’t work out. The union and school board continue to talk.
The teachers are asking for a 6.5 percent increase for the 2015-2016 school year.
“Teachers have also been frustrated and angered by the district’s refusal to put the new state funds into the classroom,” the Stockton Teachers Association said in a statement.
According to the union, the 1,800 members have been bargaining since June 2015 on a contract that expired on Aug. 31, 2016.
“Through a variety of activities … the chapter has been focusing the public’s attention on the district’s mismanagement of fiscal and human resources that is undermining the education of Stockton’s students,” the union said.
KCRA 3 called the Stockton school district for a response about the vote. They did not respond by the time this story was posted.
