Brazil: CUT union refuses to recognise current government
EVENT
Vagner Freitas, the president of the Unified Workers' Central (CUT) said on 14 September that his organisation did not recognise the government of President Michel Temer, labelling it as illegitimate
on the grounds that it took power through the impeachment of former president Dilma Rousseff, rather than through an election.
Freitas made the statement despite having met Labour Minister Ronaldo Nogueira earlier, stressing that the CUT was also planning to participate in a national strike against Temer on 22 September.
This strike has been organised by the left-leaning Brazil Popular Front (Frente Brasil Popular: FBP), which is formed by over 60 social and labour organisations including CUT, Brazil's largest labour union, and Brazil's Landless Rural Workers' Movement (MST).
