Canada : Saskatoon Transit workers back to meeting table today

The union that represents Saskatoon Transit workers will be meeting with city administrators this morning at an essential services tribunal.

It's the latest meeting in a labour struggle that has stretched

on for years. Workers haven't had a contract for four years.

In 2014, workers were locked out by the city for a month, before the lockout was deemed illegal.

Last week, the union held a strike vote. Union president Jim Yakubowski said no job action would take place until today's meeting was completed.

Meanwhile, the city made what it's calling its final offer to workers earlier this week.

While wages are on the table, the main issue dividing the two sides is the union's pension plan.

The Amalgamated Transit Union has said the city wants the right to cap pension contributions, and lower payouts to workers if the plan isn't fiscally healthy. The city said that's not true, and is trying to remain fiscally accountable to taxpayers.

The union has said if it does take job action, it will not start with a strike and could do anything from a ban on overtime to refuse to wear uniforms.
